At his dashing best, All-Australian half-back Robert Murphy was a key driver in the Western Bulldogs’ 37-point defeat over Port Adelaide on Sunday.

Amassing 32 possessions at 94% efficiency, Murphy’s trademark run and carry was invaluable to the Bulldogs’ counter attacking moves out of the back half.

Murphy said an increasingly settled back six was a step in the right direction for the Club with Christian Howard and Easton Wood returning to the senior side in recent weeks from injury.

“I think the guys, you know, we gelled pretty well,” Murphy said.

“We have had a bit of an indifferent year down there in defence and I thought today was a step in the right direction.

Full of praise for Howard in his first game back from a round one knee injury, Murphy said his return was a big plus for the Bulldogs back six.

“It is great having another left footer I don’t think that should be underestimated - And he is a beautiful kick,” he said.

“He has missed a lot of footy so to slot back in and I think he got a fair bit of the footy himself… that was a big plus for us.”
