Western Bulldogs captain Matthew Boyd says the playing group is excited about the fresh ideas the new-look coaching panel have produced so far this pre-season.

“It is always good to hear some new voices, I suppose it is not so much the voices but the fresh ideas that come in,” Boyd told over 1800 guests at Monday's EJ Whitten Social Club Event.

“The great thing that the coaches have been able to do is to make it exciting, make it challenging, make it competitive and as footballers we thrive on those things.

“We are starting to become animals in the gym and hopefully we become animals out on the field.”

With Brendan McCartney taking the reigns as senior coach, the Bulldogs will look to improve all areas of the game with a strong emphasis on education then practice.

The addition of Western Bulldogs great Rohan Smith, Stephen King and Shannon Grant to the assistant coaching panel means there’s a range of new ideas and views circulating at the Club.

“We are doing a hell of a lot of match simulated training and scenario based training and really learning more about the game style that [Coach Brendan McCartney] wants us to play,” Boyd said.

“We want to play a really hard, aggressive style of footy but a style that is attractive still.

“Not to say we haven’t been able to do that in the past… but we certainly want to get back to our best.

“It is going to be a different looking attack on the ball from all of us.”
A real team player, Boyd is not satisfied with his achievements so far which include last year’s Charles Sutton Medal.

While he is grateful for the individual accolades and honours, his drive is motivated by the need to add a Premiership Medal to his trophy cabinet.

“I’d much prefer to be looking back at the trophy cabinet at a couple other medals and hopefully 22 other guys get one of those as well,” he said.
