With one week until the Western Bulldogs 5th CALDplay (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) Football Carnival, training is in full swing with six teams across Melbourne’s western region.

The CALDplay Football Carnival, held annually during Refugee week, is set to kick off on Wednesday 20th June at the Bulldogs home ground, Whitten Oval.

Almost 150 students ranging from 18 to 65 years old, representing over 25 nationalities are participating in the program with 80% having lived in Australia for less than 5 years - giving the Bulldogs the opportunity to introduce AFL to those who may not have even seen a full game.

The six week program also allows for multicultural students to learn the importance of fire awareness through the program’s partnership with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) who came on board in 2011 to raise awareness and break down the barrier between multicultural communities and the emergency services.

With both women’s and men’s divisions, the program caters to a very broad range of multicultural students - embracing the diversity in the west and teaching people from every walk of the globe about the great game of AFL.
