Footscray has succumbed to Werribee in a 23-point loss at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Effort from the Dogs was evident, but the Tigers proved too strong in the 10.9 (69) to 7.4 (46) defeat.

The opening term was a see-sawing spectacle with scores going back and forth between the two teams.

Momentum stuck predominately with the home side, with Footscray chasing opportunities for goals.

Efforts from Riley Garcia saw the scores tight in the first term, before Werribee ran away with three unanswered goals to establish a 20-point lead heading into half-time.

It was a similar story after the break as Footscray struggled to capitalise on momentum inside-50, while the Tigers’ forward pressure allowed them to kick away.

The fourth term saw more efficient ball movement in the opening minutes for the ‘Scray, but the Tigers’ pressure took over again with Footscray unable to capitalise on few opportunities inside their forward half.

Despite the scoreline, the Dogs’ defensive pressure stood up all game, winning the tackle count 77 to 53.

Garcia impressed for Footscray, finishing with two goals as well as being the team’s highest ball-winner with 27 disposals.

Cooper Craig-Peters showed dominance around the ball, finishing with seven clearances and 13 disposals.

Footscray will now turn its attention to Carlton next Sunday at Mission Whitten Oval.
