Tuesday was an historic day for more reasons than one at Victoria University Whitten Oval.
Prior to the first-ever joint open training session with the men’s AFL team, we all got fitted for our playing guernseys and shorts. It was another step along the way that makes you stop and think about just how real this is and how close round one is.
The history that the jumper represents, as well as the exciting future that it will be a part of is extraordinary to think about.
Whilst getting fitted for our playing gear was extremely exciting, the joint training session was another opportunity to learn and take in knowledge from different voices.
From the warm-up to the drills, having some of the very best footballers in the land next to us, passing on nuances and wisdom was simply awesome.
With the two teams joining forces for the session it truly showcased the ‘one club’ mantra that is entrenched within the Club. Having the chance to break off into groups and work on individual player development with the guys was something that the whole group really enjoyed and we certainly took a lot away from it.
Whether it was marking technique, goal kicking, reading the play and reacting, kicking or handballing, all the AFL coaches and players were terrific.
Unfortunately, with our differing schedules it's difficult to create a time when we can do joint sessions, but I'm sure if the opportunity presented itself in the future, both teams would jump at the chance.
And then there were the fans that turned out.
Where do I start with the red, white and blue faithful? It was great to see so many turn up in the scorching heat to watch us train.
With the sun beaming down, the smiling faces on the young boys and girls was priceless. We can’t wait to see you all at the games and have no doubt your cheering at VU Whitten Oval will give us a massive home ground advantage.
To think that it's just over two weeks until round one, the moment we will realise a dream of running out as AFLW players, is incredible. All of the hard work that began years ago for most of us – simply for the love of the game and never expecting to get to this level - will be on display in that round one battle against Fremantle.
Before Fremantle, we face Collingwood on Australia Day in our first practice match. That will be a great chance to trial and also fine tune some things against a quality opponent before we get into the real stuff on February 4th.
Only 14 days to go!
