You can expect to see plenty of support from the Western Bulldogs’ men’s team in the stands when the AFL women’s league kicks off in February according to Easton Wood.
The women’s teams' round three clash with Melbourne is scheduled for 7:35pm at Victoria University Whitten Oval, immediately after the men’s team faces the Demons in the opening match of the 2017 JLT Community Series pre-season competition.
Wood told westernbulldogs.com.au he was looking ‘absolutely’ forward to supporting his fellow Bulldogs throughout the inaugural AFLW season.
“Especially being in the pre-season for us, we’ll have the time to get there and we’re really excited to get to our first pre-season game because they play directly after us,” Wood said.
“So we’ll be able to hang around, and it’s at the Whitten Oval, so [we] can’t wait.”
Wood was a key figure in the Club’s decision to host a joint open training session on Tuesday bringing together the two sides on the training track for the first time.
“We just thought it was a good opportunity because we haven’t had really any crossover with the women’s team as yet because they train late and we’re out before they get here, he said.
“We were feeling that before the games came around it would be nice to get to know a few of them a bit more, and what better way to do that than train together and spend some time together getting to know each other.”
Hannah Scott, who was taken with the 21st pick in the 2016 NAB AFL Women’s draft said she just tried to absorb as much as she could throughout the two hour session.
“It was fantastic, they’ve been really supportive throughout the whole thing, Scott said of the men's team.
“We pass them in the gym every now and then and have a chat but this was the first time we’ve been able to get out on the ground together. It was really awesome to get out there and run around together with the guys you’ve grown up watching on TV.
“They’re very much about three teams, one club and I couldn’t think of anywhere I’d rather be.”
The Bulldogs women’s team will open the season on February 4 under lights at VU Whitten Oval against Fremantle, while the reigning premiers begin their pre-season campaign on February 18 against Melbourne.
