Footscray head coach Stewart Edge shares his thoughts on the 13 AFL-listed players who took part in the round three defeat to Richmond.
Stefan Martin
21 disposals, five marks, 10 clearances, 12 hitouts
“Stef was terrific. He had a huge task against Ivan Soldo and Samson Ryan after we lost Jordon Sweet almost immediately, but we were able to win clearances and get good field positioning off his hard work.”
Hayden Crozier
21 disposals, nine marks
“Croz is a great organiser and communicator. Our younger players really benefit every time he is in the team. He had a good game from an aerial point of view – his courage in the air is unbelievable.”
Josh Schache
20 disposals, eight marks, five rebounds
“This was definitely Josh’s best game so far this year. He played back for the entire day, and we saw the best of his ball movement. He really showed how important his involvement was for us particularly in getting the ball out of the back-half. He kicks the ball so well.”
Rhylee West
18 disposals, three marks, four clearances, one goal
“This was Westy’s signature game – he fronts up every week. His signature contested-style game while working unbelievably hard for the team – it’s just his default setting.”
Buku Khamis
11 disposals, seven marks, three tackles
“Buku was good – he’s had a good couple of weeks now, particularly with his intercept marking. We even experimented with him in the ruck a little bit just to give Stef some relief, and he looked okay in that as well.”
Charlie Parker
Seven disposals, two tackles
“This was Charlie’s first game for the Club after a very interrupted summer, so he was a little bit rusty but it was good to get him going again. We’re looking forward to seeing what the weeks ahead hold.”
Dom Bedendo
Three disposals, one mark, one goal
“Unfortunately Dom broke his hand in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the game. He started really well and kicked an early goal, so it’s just unfortunate for him.”
Arthur Jones
12 disposals, two clearances, one goal
“Arthur’s work rate is just fantastic – he’s clearly a great athlete with both speed and endurance, and is showing really good signs in terms of week-to-week improvement. He’s developing nicely.”
Luke Cleary
17 disposals, six marks
“Luke played as a mid-sized defender, and had some really nice involvements. He’s really improving his 1v1s for a young guy who is a bit lighter-framed. He’s very bold and keen to get the ball in his hands.”
Roarke Smith
17 disposals, nine marks, three clearances, two goals
“Roarke played on the wing all day, and got us going with an early goal. He’s looking to bounce back to AFL level, so there were some really nice aspects of his game that he’d also be pleased with.”
Riley Garcia
29 disposals, eight inside-50s, four clearances
“Riley played well – he actually spent a half as a small-forward which helps his AFL prospects, but his hardness and commitment at the ball and opposition player is just unquestionable.”
Cody Raak
20 disposals, five marks, two tackles
“Cody is continuing to develop as a back. He certainly showed plenty of improvement from across the summer and into the beginning of the season.”
Jordon Sweet
Two disposals, two hitouts
“Jordon unfortunately copped a head knock early in the game, and will miss this week as well.”
On VFL-listed players...
“Lachie Sullivan (32 disposals, six marks, eight clearances, five inside-50s, six tackles and one goal) was great – he’s definitely been in our best players each week. He’s perhaps been inspired by other boys being drafted, so has taken his game to another level.”
