Second-year forward Cody Weightman already has a highlights package the envy of many.
But it’s a simple approach that is keeping him grounded and helping him make a strong contribution for the Western Bulldogs in 2021.
The 20-year-old has become an important part of the Bulldogs’ forward mix, kicking 17 goals in 10 games since coming into the senior side in round nine.
“I’ve taken more of a week by week focus this year and it seems to have served me quite well up until this point,” Weightman told Channel 7 this week.
“I’m just happy week-to-week to hold my spot and do my little role.
“I’ll just keep trying to perform and not put any pressure or expectation on myself. That’s the way I need to play, with a bit of freedom.”
Much like Weightman climbing on top of Max Gawn’s head on Saturday night, the Bulldogs have now climbed into top spot on the AFL ladder.
They have embraced all the challenges thrown at them up to this point of the season.
Weightman believes the team’s approach to the last month was important – but knows they need to maintain the rage with four games to go before finals.
“We talked about it a month or so ago, just about this July patch and how it can be a challenge that you can set your season up from or fall off the cliff a little bit,” he said.
“It’s about attacking this little challenge at this time of the year where there’s some sore bodies at every club and the mornings are darker and colder and whatnot.
“I think we’ve attacked it really well and hopefully it puts us in good stead come the end of the year.
“We’ve got four games to go and we plan to finish all of them strong and treat every opposition with the respect they deserve.”
