THE WESTERN Bulldogs will be doing their part to make Saturday's NAB Cup grand final a memorable one with coach Rodney Eade promising to take his best available side into the pre-season decider.

A calf injury will keep skipper Brad Johnson out of the side to square off against St Kilda, but Eade said none of his players would be rested for a match that he would be delighted to win.

"Obviously everything has been geared towards round one, but now that we're in a grand final I think we're looking forward to it. There's great expectation from our end and great excitement," Eade said from Whitten Oval on Wednesday.

"There are not many times you get into a grand final. I know it's not the main season, but it's always good practice isn't it? It's always good training to be able to play in any sort of finals series.

"It's good to play quality opposition. I think our lead-in has been pleasing each week. I think once you get to this stage of the finals series it's a last hitout before the home and away season and the teams are going to be fair dinkum about it.

"From our point of view we're flat out."

Daniel Giansiracusa was rested last week but returns to captain the side in the absence of Johnson.

While Eade expressed his hopes for a NAB Cup victory, he disputed the notion winning could give his side a mental edge over St Kilda during the home-and-away season.

"Whether you win or lose I don't think that's going to have any psychological plus or minus against the opposition at all during the year," he said.

"I think it's more, from our point of view, the more times you can practice in a finals series the better off you are.

"We're looking forward to it. Now that we're there we're going to give it our best shot."

He said club went into the pre-season competition with the intention of giving its players the best-possible preparation for the premiership season.

"We had a plan going into the start of the NAB Cup about when players would have a rest and the amount of game time played and we've managed that," he said.

"[Shaun] Higgins and [Ryan] Hargrave played a half last week, [Matthew] Boyd had a half last week and we had eight or nine miss the first round, so we've looked at what's the best preparation for round one.

"If that meant we lost, well we lost even though we were trying to win each game."
