Tom Boyd was back training with his Bulldogs teammates on Tuesday afternoon after taking a leave of absence from the Club while he received treatment for clinical depression.

The Bulldogs held an open training session at VU Whitten oval ahead of Sunday’s clash with Carlton, where the 21-year-old was a welcome site amongst his teammates.

Veteran defender Matthew Boyd flagged the Boyd’s potential return on RSN Breakfast radio this morning, telling hosts Daniel Harford and Jimmy Bartel that he looked forward to welcoming him back to the Club.

“He’s going pretty well, as well as can be expected in these circumstances, Boyd said.

“We can really figuratively throw an arm around him this week and welcome him back to the group.”

While the timing of the younger Boyd’s return to football is still unclear, the focus around the Club is firmly on his health, according the 291-game former skipper.

“Clinical depression and mental health it doesn’t discriminate for anyone so people have got to understand that and we’ve got to support him as best as we possibly can.

“We love him, he’s a great person, we love having him around and we just want him healthy and happy again.”
