Key Plays:

The Western Bulldogs showed a real hunger for the ball in the first quarter, keeping Hawthorn goalless until the dying minutes of the term.

Robert Murphy’s shift up forward began to pay dividends with him kicking the first goal of the day from a free kick.

A Hawthorn turnover kicking out of their goal square soon after proved costly, with the Bulldogs able to capitalize on the opposition’s mistake and slot through a second.

Clay Smith and Ryan Griffen looked to be in fine form for the quarter, setting up a number of plays through the midfield.

One to watch:

Liam Jones lived up to his reputation of being a solid contested mark and provided a tall target for the Bulldogs in the forward line. Building on form from the Indigenous All Stars game and NAB Cup round one, the 21-year-old began show more of a physical presence. While unable to convert from his two set shots, he took three marks - all contested.
