4: Finals football
For the second year running, the Bulldogs made their way through to the AFL finals with a win in the last round of the home-and-away season.
Just like 2019, the Bulldogs found themselves in a do-or-die situation for about a month leading into finals.
And it all came down to the last game, with the Bulldogs needing a win against Fremantle in Cairns.
They duly delivered against a determined Dockers outfit, running away with a 30-point win in a performance led by Tom Liberatore and Lachie Hunter.
It was tough work for the first three quarters, with the Bulldogs edging out to 15-point lead by three quarter time, before kicking away with a three goal to nil final term.
The celebrations were wholesome – with senior coach Luke Beveridge acknowledging every player individually post-game, as they walked through the race and into the rooms.
While the Bulldogs’ second taste of finals football in as many seasons didn’t finish the way they would have liked, there was cause for optimism this time around.
The margin was just seven points at half-time in the Saints’ favour at The Gabba.
But the Bulldogs lost defender Zaine Cordy to injury just before the major break as the Saints capitalised, opening up a four-goal advantage.
A final term response had Bulldogs fans on the edge of their seats.
Goals to Aaron Naughton, Hunter, Liberatore and Caleb Daniel reduced the margin to just three points, with two minutes left on the clock.
It was a thrilling comeback... and who knows what might have been had there been just a little more time left.
