8: Debutante Dogs sink Saints

04:40

From the outset, the 2020 AFLW opening round against St Kilda had an abundance of narratives.
From the five Bulldog debutantes named to play, to facing AFLW newcomers on their home deck, to the first-year coach coming up against his old mob – there was no knowing which way the game would go.
But it was the Bulldogs who flexed their muscles early, setting themselves up with a four-goal advantage in the first term.
Leading from start to finish, they went on to open their season in style with a 25-point victory.

7: All Australian Dogs

Superb seasons from Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae and Caleb Daniel were acknowledged with All Australian selection.
In his first year as skipper, Bontempelli earned his third All Australian selection – averaging 20.9 disposals per game and kicking 11 goals.
Ball magnet Macrae earned a second call-up, in a year where he celebrated his 150th AFL game. Macrae finished the home-and-away season with 455 disposals – second in the AFL.
Daniel received his first guernsey, after a season where he was rated the game’s number-one ranked general defender. We’ll talk more about him later in this series.

6: Cody’s clutch curler

There are more than a few members of the first kick, first goal club.
But if you’re talking degree of difficulty, Cody Weightman sits head and shoulders at the top of the list.
The exciting small forward wasted no time making his mark in the AFL.
On debut against Essendon in round seven, Weightman took a pack mark in the forward pocket, late in the first quarter.
That was good. But the next bit was incredible.
He went back and curled home a 40-metre checkside goal from the boundary line.
No one summed it up better than Bruce McAvaney – it will go down in history as one of the great first touches in footy.
