WESTERN Bulldogs midfielder Adam Cooney accepts his troublesome right knee will never be 100 per cent, but he is confident he can manage the problem throughout the season.

Cooney, the 2008 Brownlow medallist, played only 13 matches last season as he battled soreness from a fractured knee cap.

But he said on Friday he was six weeks in advance of where he had been last pre-season, with the knee feeling "a lot better".

"It's probably not going to be 100 per cent,'' Cooney said of the knee.

"In saying that, what I had done in the off-season has taken a little bit of the pressure off the knee cap, it seems to have worked pretty well.

"It's just a management thing. I'm not the only guy who's played with injuries, a lot of guys have done it in the past.

''As long as I am feeling good week to week, we will sort of manage it."

Cooney said he was unlikely to play in the opening round of the NAB Cup, but hoped to play at least two pre-season matches to build fitness for the home and away season.
