Second placed Williamstown played third placed Sandringham in the VFL at Burbank Oval on Sunday. Williamstown made 3 changes to the side that defeated North Ballarat in Round 5. Matthew Little came in for his first senior game.

Cameron Lockwood was recalled from the reserves and Bulldog Jarrod Harbrow returned from injury. Stephen Tiller who played for the Western Bulldogs last week did not play while James Beaumont was dropped to the reserves.

A big crowd was in attendance and many spectators took advantage of the “free day” initiative of the Williamstown Football Club.   

 

 

Sandringham Captain Peter Summers won the toss and chose to kick to the scoreboard end which was favoured by a 2 goal wind. It was a fierce opening with both sides having a strong attack on the ball and the man. Williamstown’s defence was standing tall with Cloke,  Meyer and Bulldogs Tom Williams, Andrejs Everitt, Andrew McDougall and Farren Ray giving tremendous run out of defence. Patrick Rose kicked a great crumbing left foot goal to open the score. David Stretton kicked a great running goal and at quarter time Williamstown had established a 9 point lead.

Williamstown has the use of the breeze and quickly extended its lead through goals to Callan Ward and (Farren)Ray. Williamstown’s midfield was capitalizing on the dominance of Peter Street and the midfield combination of Brett Johnson, Ben Jolley, Liam Picken, Cameron Lockwood and Bulldogs Guy O’Keefe, and Jarrod Harbrow were all prominent. Sandringham kicked consecutive goals to remain in touch until (Jarrod) Harbrow goaled after the siren after a free kick for a high tackle.

Sandringham hit back strongly in the third quarter and goals to Crowe, Summers and Sautner had Williamstown on the back foot. It was apparent that the whole Sandringham side had lifted and they crept within a goal deep into the third quarter as the large crowd found their voice. Bulldog Wayde Skipper kicked a long goal before Brett Johnson roved the pack to kick truly. Galea and (Wayde)Skipper added majors to re-establish a 24 point lead at ¾ time.

With a breeze to its back Williamstown attacked but the Sandringham defence stood tall. Against the flow Sandy kicked the opening goal to reduce the lead. This seemed to sting Williamstown into action as Urch goaled after a free kick and then Matthew Little had a purple patch where he kicked 3 goals in quick succession. Patrick Rose also broke the shackles to goal twice and Bulldog Andrew McDougall drifted forward to kick his first goal close to the siren and seal a 64 point thumping win for the Seagulls.

Williamstown and Sandringham met in a clash of the undefeated sides. The first half was a high scoring free for all with Willi leading by 5 points at the long break. In the second half Williamstown found an extra gear to kick 16 goals to nil and win by an astonishing 105 points.
