Season Overview:
Versatile tall Fletcher Roberts spent much of the year being groomed in defence playing for VFL affiliate Williamstown. His ability to read the play and position himself put him in good stead for the new role after playing predominantly as a forward in his junior years. Getting a late call up to debut in round 20 against Richmond, he put in a solid performance as a substitute and showed enough to retain his spot and play out a full four quarters the week after. Roberts was shifted forward in Williamstown’s finals campaign successfully adding a taller target in the Seagulls forward line for the final three rounds.

By the Numbers:
In the VFL he was named amongst Williamstown’s best players on four occasions including the Seagulls’ Preliminary Finals appearance where he kicked a game high three goals. He also had a season high 21 disposals, seven marks, seven tackles. During his two AFL appearances he accumulated seven one percenters against Sydney in round 21 - the third highest of any player on the day.
Season Highlight:
In the game against eventual Premiers Sydney, Roberts helped hold down a key defensive post. With a personal best 13 disposals, four marks and seven one percenters in his second AFL game, the 19 year old looks to be a promising prospect.
Pre-Season Focus:
As he looks to increase his game time next year, Roberts will need to add bulk to his developing frame during the pre-season. His versatility could see him given a number of differing roles over the Summer to strengthen his craft at both ends of the ground.
