Tribunal downgrades Grant's charge
Western Bulldog Jarrad Grant is free to play this weekend after successfully challenging his striking charge
The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to striking Collingwood's Ben Reid in the fourth quarter of Sunday's clash at Etihad Stadium but argued the contact was not made above the shoulders.
The jury of Wayne Henwood, Stewart Loewe and Wayne Schimmelbusch found he connected with Reid's body, which reduced Grant's demerit points to 93.75 for the next 12 months and left him free to play this weekend.
Both Grant and Reid gave evidence at the hearing, which lasted just under an hour.
Grant said he intended to push Reid in the chest after the Magpie had made many attempts to block his run throughout the game.
He said Reid slipped as contact was made to his collarbone, which saw the impact slide to his windpipe area.
Reid was badly winded after the incident and spent time on his hands and knees as he tried to regain his breath.
However, he supported Grant's claim the contact was directed at his collarbone and interfered only with his throat as a result of his leg buckling at the same time.
The Magpies' medical report said Reid wasn't treated for a significant injury after the game and was expected to be available to play this week.
Grant said he was grateful for the result and was anticipating the Bulldogs' important clash with the Lions this week.
He also said he would endeavour to apologise to Reid for the blow.
"It was a good result in there and I'm looking forward to this Sunday," he said.
"It was a bit hard [to apologise] in there but I'll speak to Ben. I knew him before so I'll speak to him in the near future."
