WESTERN Bulldogs tall forward Liam Jones credits former power forward Barry Hall with teaching him how to approach his AFL career.

Jones, now 21, played with Hall in 2010 after his debut in round 18 and then all of 2011.

The Rising Star nominee from round 24 last year said Hall taught him the intensity required to succeed at AFL level.

"I leaned to train with real intensity and to just work hard," Jones said. "If you can just work 100 per cent, things will go your way."

While Jones learnt plenty from the aggressive forward, he said he can't fill Hall's shoes on his own.

"He was such an amazing player for a long period of time," Jones said.

"I think it's up to myself, Jarrad Grant, Jordan Roughead, Ayce Cordy, Luke Dahlhaus … all of us will have to fill his shoes. But it's going to be a struggle."

Jones grew up barracking for St Kilda. Hall, who made his debut with the Saints in 1996, was one of his favourite players.

Jones said his aim this season is to improve on last season, when he kicked 19 goals from 20 games.

"I want to have the feeling of being the main man down there [in attack]," he said.

"I'd like to have that sort trust from my teammates to kick it to me. I'd like to kick a few more goals as well."
