Western Bulldogs are pleased to announce that Australian Football League (AFL) has awarded Chief Executive Simon Garlick the 2012 Graeme Samuel Scholarship.
Garlick is the first Western Bulldogs employee to be awarded the scholarship that recognises a senior manager within the football industry who is specifically working in business or administration.
The Graeme Samuel Scholarship provides $20,000 towards furthering the recipient’s studies which Garlick said he was looking forward to.
“I have already completed a MBA so am considering an intensive course overseas,” Garlick said.
“I’m keen to continue my studies to help the club implement our five year strategic plan which is focused on engaging with one of Australia’s most rapidly expanding urban regions - Melbourne’s western growth corridor.”
Garlick wore the Red, White and Blue guernsey on 137 occasions during his playing career after playing 44 games for the Sydney Swans.
Since hanging up the boots, Garlick has held various managerial roles with LeasePlan Australia before rejoining the Bulldogs as football director in 2007.
Garlick became the Bulldogs Chief Commercial Officer in 2009 before being appointed the Club’s Chief Executive in late 2010.
The scholarship has been awarded by the AFL Commission since 2003 to recognise Graeme Samuel’s contribution to the game.
Graeme Samuel was one of the original AFL Commissioners when it was formed in 1984.
He resigned from the Commission in 2003 to take up the position of Chairman of the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission.
Over two decades Graeme played an invaluable role in the strategic direction of the AFL competition and Australian football in general.

- Geoff Walsh, then CEO of North Melbourne FC and now Director of Football, Collingwood FC.
