As part of an ongoing commitment to engage new and emerging communities, Western Bulldogs community division SpiritWest Services in association with Tennis Victoria organised a complimentary visit for 43 refugee and migrant people to the 2011 Australian Open.

Attendee Michael Moowahshi was fortunate enough to participate in the day and said “I never dreamed that I would see such great players like this before. Thank you for making this happen in my life.”

For the majority in attendance it was their first opportunity to visit a world class sporting event of this magnitude and we’d like to thank Tennis Victoria and VicHealth for their generous contribution in assisting SpiritWest Services to make the day possible.
SpiritWest services utilise sports programs and sporting events as a mechanism to engage and integrate members of migrant and refugee backgrounds into Australian culture, through the clubs Settlement Grants Program.

Throughout the year SpiritWest actively deliver a variety of sporting programs including Football, Swimming, Tennis and Cricket to primary, secondary and university equivalent students studying English at language centres across Melbourne’s Western Region.

The Programs aim is to engage migrant and refugee students in sport and physical activities that will enable them to learn more about Australian culture, whilst promoting healthy living by providing sporting opportunities.
