After a slight lay off, the Williamstown Update is back for Season 2010.  This week we catch up with Williamstown Coach Peter German as he casts his eye over the weekend’s game against Werribee.

Peter thanks for joining us for this first time this year, what were your impressions of the win over Werribee?

PG- It was a game of two halves, we kicked a couple of early goals and I think the players might have relaxed a bit.  We started to play a softer brand of football and they really took it up to us in the first two quarters which put us on the back foot.

At half time we almost had to draw a line in the sand and put it behind us.  We needed to refocus on what was letting us down, which was our general hardness around the ground and at stoppages.  Once we did that we were able to maximise our strengths like our running and skill level.

It must have been pleasing as well to get the win, considering the strong rivalry between the two clubs.

PG- I think you need to be around the Williamstown Football Club for a long time to fully appreciate the rivalry between the two clubs.  There is definitely a good rivalry and I think that is healthy within any football association.  It certainly was heated and willing at times but it was pleasing that we were able to refocus in the second half and move forward.

Any standout performances on the weekend? Obviously Big Will Minson had a good game.

PG- Will was good and had about 50 hitouts against two different types of ruckman.

I was also happy with Patrick Rose, Matthew Panos and Andrew Hooper who chipped in around the goals in the second half.  They had about 12 goals between them and hopefully it gives a player like Matthew Panos a bit of confidence.

Patrick Rose was back playing in his traditional style, around the goals and manufacturing scoring opportunities.

Andrew Hooper has floated in and out a bit but his second half was very good and despite starting slowly Jarrad Boumann played an important role on day.

We also still believe we have a lot of improvement left with players like Stephen Tiller and Sam Reid to make their way into the side over the coming weeks.

Is there anyone we should be keeping our eyes on for AFL selection over the coming weeks?

PG- As far as I am concerned Will has been fantastic for us, he has lead the playing group in a really positive way and has performed well.

There was also a few young boys on the weekend who really stepped up in the second half.

And next week what are your thoughts on the clash against Coburg?

PG- It’s our last game before the interstate game break.  Hopefully we will get Tutt and Howard into the team and with a few guys pushing for the AFL side it will be tough at the selection table this week.

We are playing a very capable side in Coburg on their home patch so it is a good opportunity for some of our guys to start staking their claim.

Ok thanks for your time Peter and we look forward to catching up with you next week.  Good luck on the weekend.
