Jack Macrae looks on the verge of taking his football to the next level in 2014, using the Western Bulldogs two NAB Challenge games to set the tone for year ahead.
Gaining an extra few centimetres and adding bulk over the pre-season, the 2012 draftee looks more self-assured at the top level and has no problems getting his hands on the pill.
“All young players come into the NAB Challenge trying to prove their worth in the team and it is important for us, all the players to put their [best foot forward],” Macrae told SEN radio.
“I’ve been happy with my form so far but there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before the season starts.”
Finding 28 and 30 touches respectively in his two games against St Kilda and Fremantle this year, the midfielder has exhibited his trademark silky skills with an even more competitive edge.
While most new draftees take time dealing with the pace of the game, Macrae said it is the mental stamina required that takes the biggest adjustment.
“I’ve been working a lot with [Assistant Coach] Steven King and [Development Coach] Joel Corey who are great footy minds and know the game really well,” he said.
“[I’ve been] working with them on my off ball positioning and staying in the game, no matter what.
“It’s a big step up from the under 18s and obviously the pace of the game but you can’t switch off at all or you will get caught out.”
