The Western Bulldogs have backed the side that took Essendon to the wire last week, making just one forced change ahead of the round 17 clash against Hawthorn on Saturday.

Jack Macrae has been recalled after a week’s respite, returning to a Bulldogs midfield that will be tasked with combating Hawthorn’s well-rehearsed run and spread from the contest.

Bulldogs Strategy and Opposition Coach Brett Mongomery said Macrae’s inclusion would benefit the Club after the loss of Clay Smith, who ruptured his ACL during the heat of the match last week.

“The only changes for this week, unfortunately with Clay Smith going out requiring a knee reconstruction, the opportunity pops up again for Jackson Macrae to come in after having a week’s rest,” Montgomery said.

One of the league's premier offensive sides i, Hawthorn are rarely short on finding avenues to goal, posing a challenging task for the Bulldogs’ key defenders.

But Montgomery said Michael Talia, Dale Morris and Jordan Roughead can restrict the Hawks’ opportunities and continue to build on their strong form.

“Michael Talia, who [is] yet to play ten games, put another solid performance in after his best on ground performance against the giants and had a really good day last week against the Bombers,” he said.

“Dale Morris continually steps up each week and takes the big jobs.

“With the Hawthorn forward line boasting as much talent as it does I am sure he will get another one of those big jobs this week and do it well.”
