Season Overview:
Gifted a second chance on the Western Bulldogs rookie list, Mark Austin embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly. Elevated to the senior list in lieu of Tom Williams - who was placed on the long term injury list - the key defender made his debut for the Bulldogs in Round four against Melbourne. Curtailing the influence of a number of powerhouse forwards in his eleven games, Season 2012 saw Austin grow in confidence and almost double his career game tally. In a cruel twist of fate the 23 year old fractured his wrist in the Bulldogs clash with his old club Carlton in round 17, which ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

By the Numbers:
While stats do not always illustrate the influence young key defenders can have on a game, Austin has improved consistently across the board on previous seasons. Stringing together eleven games (two more than his previous best) he finished equal first in average one percenters at the Club (6.3) and equal first in disposal efficiency (84%). He also achieved a new personal record taking seven marks against Gold Coast in round eight.

Season Highlight:
A behind the back handball would rate as Austin’s most memorable trick he pulled out this season but solid performances against North Melbourne’s Aaron Edwards and particularly Geelong’s James Podsiadly would easily be considered as his best four quarter efforts. Restricting Podsiadly to a mere six disposals at 50% accuracy, four marks and one goal, the Bulldogs defender won the match up comprehensively. He himself had seven touches at 84% disposal efficiency, eight one percenters, two strong tackles and three marks.

Pre-Season Focus:
After an extended stint on the sidelines, Austin will be looking to regain match fitness and fully rehabilitate his wrist injury. After restoring any strength or power lost through injury, continuing to build up his physical presence would put him in good stead. With injuries holding his development back in previous years, a chance at a full pre-season has great appeal and will hopefully set him up for a solid season in 2013.
