Aker in the Dog house
Jason Akermanis may be sanctioned by the Western Bulldogs after the controversial veteran revealed he was entirely responsible for his recent homophobic column
The Dogs are not expected to act on Akermanis until early next week but some form of punishment has not been ruled out.
"We'll deal with it next week. I'm not ruling anything out," general manager of football James Fantasia told afl.com.au on Friday.
"We just want to get all the circumstances together and have a closer look as a club. Then we'll work out how we're going to deal with it.
"We're going to concentrate on the footy tonight and we'll deal with it next week."
Akermanis has been named to start on the bench against the Bombers and is expected to play.
"Put it this way, if he doesn't line up, it won't be because of anything we've done," Fantasia said.
Fantasia admitted the revelations were frustrating after it was speculated Akermanis' words in the controversial piece had been altered following club approval.
"When these things happen, it's always disappointing because you deal with what's in front of you," he said.
"Then you find out there were other circumstances and it's something we need to think about."
Fantasia was unsure of the players' attitude towards Akermanis and what had transpired since last Thursday's story, but he suggested the players could be included in deciding what to do with the situation.
"I haven't spoken to any of the boys yet. It came out last night and we have a game to think about today," he said.
"That's all we can concentrate on. We're not going to get into any of the other issues around it.
"The players themselves don't worry about those issues from that point of view.
"That's up to us to deal with and they'll have some input at some time, but not right now."
AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said the Dogs were within their right to feel let down by Akermanis.
"I think the Western Bulldogs are disappointed in Jason, and it's been vindicated the Herald Sun were absolutely correct in their assertion they didn't change anything," Demetriou said on Fairfax radio station 3AW.
The club released a statement on Thursday night regarding Akermanis' acknowledgement the piece was a "fair and accurate portrayal of his views on the subject".
Tha statement said Akermanis had apologised to both the Herald Sun and the Bulldogs for "any suggestion that he did not approve the published column".
The column, published in News Limited publications last week, claimed the league was not ready for a homosexual player to "come out", and that the publicity surrounding such a move could "break the fabric of a club".
