Sloppy shooting let us down: Eade
Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade believes poor skills cost his team the match against the Lions on Saturday night
Eade was philosophical about the Bulldogs' fourth loss in five weeks and said the game should have been over at half time if his men had kicked straight and taken their chances.
But instead it was tight all night and the Lions got home 13.12 (90) to 10.19 (79) on the back of a five goals to two final term.
The Bulldogs squandered numerous chances in front of goal, particularly in the second half where they kicked 3.11, and the poor conversion came back to haunt them.
Eade said the result had nothing to do with a late season lack of fitness.
"I thought our skill level and decision making was pretty poor and that included goalkicking," he said.
"There was plenty of times where players were clear and free that we should have been able to hit, which we normally do, so that was one area that we need to work on.
"We should have been five goals up at half time and we should have put them away and good sides do that, but to Brisbane's credit they willed themselves over the line in the last quarter and they probably wanted it more than we did.
"But the set shots we had we should have been four or five up at half time and we had the first five shots of the third quarter and should have put them away so that was disappointing.
"We should have been able to kick 20-odd goals tonight."
The misses came from a multitude of sources with the normally reliable Jason Akermanis and Brad Johnson among the culprits.
However Eade said he was pleased with former Lion Akermanis' game and thought the Brownlow Medallist had turned the quarter in the past game-and-a-half.
The Bulldogs coach admitted a number of his senior players, including half-forward Robert Murphy, needed to lift in the run up to the finals.
"I think you've just got to work hard. I think the belief is there," he said.
"Out of the losses we've had -- even Geelong and Carlton -- we played well for three quarters, and tonight again we played well for three quarters, we just didn't do well in the last quarter.
"We've just got to try and find that consistency. Kick straight (and) you're six (goals) up at three quarter time and then the last quarter probably doesn't matter."
Eade said Scott West and Shaun Higgins would come into calculations for Friday night's match against Essendon after coming through their returns for Williamstown.
