A fractured cheekbone has ruled Nick Lower out for the remainder of the season, after the 26-year-old suffered a knock in the VFL against North Ballarat on Sunday.

Western Bulldogs Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said an x-ray today revealed the fracture.

“Nick got a knock during the game down at North Ballarat on the weekend and he’s had an x-ray today which has confirmed just a small fracture of his cheekbone,” McKenzie said.

“Unfortunately that will put him out for the remainder of the year.”

Matthew Boyd got through his first game back unscathed, after missing a fortnight rehabilitating a calf injury.

The captain collected 27 disposals at 89% efficiency against Adelaide on Sunday, as well as five clearances and four tackles.

“Boydy got through the game well, he played out the game fine and has come in today feeling really good – so we are in a good place with him,” he said.

Another player making strides in his recovery is Clay Smith, who has been given the nod to resume training in the rehabilitation group after undergoing a knee reconstruction in July.

“Clay is traveling well, he has had his recent review with the surgeon who is very happy with his knee,” he said.

“He is allowed to come off crutches and start his rehab, so he is in a good place.”
