With silky skills and a deadly kick, Caleb Daniel’s disposal efficiency had been the eye-catching strength of his game.
Daniel’s ability with ball in hand was the major drawcard in the Western Bulldogs taking him at pick 46 in the 2014 NAB AFL National Draft.
Yet in only two games at AFL level, the 19-year-old midfielder has displayed a well-rounded game that has confirmed the Bulldogs’ decision not to overlook him in the draft, despite his height.
In his debut match in round 14 Daniel collected 14 disposals, five marks and one goal in only a half of football, coming on after half time as the sub.
He then picked up 16 touches, four marks and five tackles in the Dogs win against the Suns, and has enjoyed two wins to start his career.
“I loved every minute of getting out there and playing the game against Carlton and then in Boydy’s 250th to get the win was incredible,” said Daniel speaking with Crocmedia’s Sportsday Radio on Monday night.
“Then again on the weekend up in Cairns, it probably wasn’t the first half that we really strive to achieve but the second half and last quarter especially was an amazing experience.”
Although suffering minor injury setbacks in the first half of the year, Daniel has enjoyed consistent VFL form when he’s played and has to date made the most of his opportunity at senior level.
The 19-year-old credits hard work to his side’s fast-finishing game against the Suns.
“It was all pretty positive, I suppose our third quarter was actually pretty good, we just didn’t capitalise on too many opportunities.
“Luke (Beveridge) just said keep playing our game and keep working them over, and running and taking the game on and it worked pretty well in the last quarter.
“We were able to get on top in the midfield and our spread was pretty good.”
Not underestimating the challenges ahead, Daniel was positive about the undefeated start to his career.
“It’s been an amazing journey already and I’m really looking forward to it continuing.”
