Yesterday (Wednesday 29th September) Whitten Oval played host to a special community event aimed at celebrating and giving thanks to the fine work of the Victorian Police and commemorating those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, as part of Blue Ribbon Day celebrations.

The Blue Ribbon remembrance, held with the support of the Western Bulldogs, Victoria Police, and City West Water, started with a kick to kick with members of the Victoria Police football team and concluded with a memorial service to remember the fallen police members.

City West Water Managing Director Anne Barker said the day was a great way to join the community to honour fallen police members.

“City West Water has a great working relationship with our local police, and we’re honoured to be able to participate in this year’s Blue Ribbon Day events,” Ms Barker said.

“Police men and women put themselves on the line every day protecting the community, so we are proud to support Blue Ribbon Day and get the community involved.”

Blue Ribbon Day began following the 1998 murders of Rodney Miller and Gary Silk in Moorabbin. Blue Ribbon Day has now evolved as the community’s day of remembrance for all members of Victoria Police who have been killed in the line of duty through a program of public memorial services and activities.

Western Bulldogs Chief Executive, Cam Rose echoed Ms Barker’s sentiments.

“The Western Bulldogs share a great relationship with City West Water and Victoria Police, this is a significant way in which we can pay tribute to the 151 Victorian Police Officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our community.”
