As the 2017 season rounds into week five tonight in Canberra, Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy says his side is continuing to build despite some 'patchy' early season form.

The Dogs are 4-1 and in fifth place on the AFL ladder and face the rampaging GWS Giants in a rematch of last season's epic preliminary final.

The Giants are in form, disposing of teams by an average margin of 54 points over the last month, while the Dogs have had to ground out their four wins.

But, it's a long season, Murphy told The Age, and his side has shown steady signs of improvement each week, all the while holding down a spot in the top eight.

"I think we're building, and I think we've improved each week," Murphy said.

"It's a 22-round steeplechase and then the finals, so it's a long way to go.

"Our form's a little bit patchy but we're able to get the wins on the board, and at this time of year, we'll take that."

Four things to watch: Dogs v Giants

The Dogs will introduce 19-year-old Bailey Williams into the mix this week, after some blistering VFL form, for his seventh career game.

With Mitch Wallis and Tory Dickson both playing in the VFL at VU Whitten Oval tonight, Williams' inclusion highlights the depth at the kennel, a key factor in last season's run.

"We had a lot of guys play last year - we've had a lot of injuries - so we've been able to absorb a lot of change over the last few years," he said.

"We'll tinker with our side for the rest of the year, as most sides will.

So far, it's all going to plan."
