Western Bulldogs AFLW recruit Daria Bannister has kicked off her first pre-season at Victoria University Whitten Oval.

A stand-out within the forward line and midfield during her time with the Under-18 All Australian squad, Bannister was selected by the Club with overall pick 19 at the 2017 NAB AFLW Draft.

Moving to Melbourne from Tasmania after completing her Year 12 exams, Bannister told westernbulldogs.com.au about her first taste of AFLW.

“It’s been a massive step up from football in Launceston, it’s definitely been challenging but I’m really enjoying it,” said Bannister.

“I’ve come into this knowing that I’m going to be challenged with a lot of my strengths and weaknesses, but I’m looking to improve my fitness.”

Watching the inaugural AFLW season from home, Bannister hoped to eventually play at the elite level alongside the trailblazers of the competition.

“During the first AFLW competition, all I was watching was these girls, they’re all role models to me. It’s been exciting to train with them and learn from them,” Bannister said.

“All the girls have taken me under their wing, Katie (Brennan) being the leader that she is and Ellie Blackburn - they’ve been pushing me to do my best.  All the girls have been really welcoming.”

Originally a netballer, Bannister managed to effectively transfer her ball skills across the two codes.

“Transitioning from netball to football made sense to me, considering the similar skills like marking the ball and agility,” she said.

“Women’s football took a big step last year and I’m glad I transferred from netball. I can’t wait to make this my career.”
