Western Bulldogs young gun Sam Davidson has lauded Tom Liberatore for his ability to lift the team in games.

Davidson, who finished with a game-high 31 disposals to go with 10 marks and 639 metres gained, said it was the stand-in skipper who led the Dogs’ resurgence late in the win over Carlton.

“It won’t take anyone by surprise but Libba, our stand-in captain at the moment - he’s the heart and soul of the Club and put up another ripping performance last night,” Davidson told Fox Footy on Saturday afternoon.

“There were a number of boys who had awesome games last night, but Libba was one in the midfield (who really helped us lift).”

Liberatore registered 30 disposals, 11 tackles, five clearances and a goal against Carlton, acting as captain since the start of the season due to the absence of Marcus Bontempelli (calf).

Davidson also thanked senior coach Luke Beveridge for allowing him the opportunity, while recognising the difference between playing AFL and VFL.

“He’s been absolutely massive for me. He showed good faith in me by giving me a debut in Round 1 and then sticking with me the last few weeks,” Davidson said.

“He’s given me some good confidence and belief to play my own game and use my running ability and skill on the wing.

“I think most people speak about it when they join the AFL ranks, but the speed of the game (is a big difference to VFL).

“In the VFL and even some lower levels, you might get a bit more time to make a decision with the footy.

“In AFL you’ve got a split second to make a good decision and hopefully use the ball well for the team.”

The Dogs will this week travel to WA ahead of a Sunday evening clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium.

An extended squad will be announced on Thursday night before the final team on Friday at 5pm AEDT.
