The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation’s men’s health program Sons of the West has kicked off for its sixth consecutive year, this week across eight local government areas.

Delivering the program to Maribyrnong, Ballarat, Sunbury, Brimbank, Maryborough, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Melton, Sons of the West continues to promote healthy living and connect men to their local communities in Victoria’s west.

Covering a wide range of topics relevant to men in the west, Sons of the West aims to combat common health inequalities related to nutrition, exercise, diversity and gender equity.

Spanning ten weeks from Monday 29th April until Friday 5th July, Sons of the West is calling on men in the local western community to head along to a session to kickstart or continue their mental, social and physical health journey.

Sons of the West leader Frank Vella said that although he had a sound understanding of health and nutrition prior to joining Sons of the West, the program reinforced those ideas and opened him up to new information regarding mental health.

“The first day I arrived (at Sons of the West) I absolutely loved the program and the people and thought yes, I’m absolutely going to put everything into this,” Vella said.

“I really enjoyed my first year here. Not only was I getting some regular exercise, but it also reinforced some things I knew about diet and nutrition.

“If I could give any advice, it would be to come along to Sons of the West and just try it. I guarantee you will find at least one thing helpful, whether it be within yourself, or to help someone else in your life. This program is so important, and I can’t recommend it enough.”
