Chilean Jose Romero arrived at Whitten Oval at the start of the 1995 season.

After finding himself on the outer at North Melbourne, having played 89 games, Romero was taken at pick 12 by the Bulldogs in the 1994 pre-season draft.

The move to Footscray reinvigorated Romero’s career; he became a vital cog in the midfield of the Bulldogs’ sides in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Romero was a fierce competitor and a strong runner – he held the beep test record of 17.1.

He played 122 games for the Bulldogs between 1995 and 2001, and won the Charles Sutton Medal in 1996.
