Caleb Daniel can see what is building at the Kennel.
He’s determined to be part of it, and has committed to the Western Bulldogs for three more years, until the end of 2021.
Daniel’s re-signing was announced alongside teammate Josh Dunkley’s today.
The 22-year-old said there was a real optimism about the Bulldogs’ future.
“It’s great to have our young group stick together,” Daniel said.
“Dunks as well signing, and the likes of Naughty and Bonti committing recently… for the future of the footy club it’s great.”
Daniel is arguably enjoying his most consistent AFL season yet – and has been talked about as a potential All Australian defender.
He’s averaging 27.6 disposals per game across half back, having made a permanent move to defence following a taste in the last month of 2018.
“Throughout the pre-season I spent a lot of time down there, playing with ‘Moz’, ‘Naughty’ and Zaine Cordy… people like that who had established themselves as backmen for a fair while,” Daniel said.
“It’s been nice to be able to learn from them and get some insights from them, as well as ‘JJ’, Matt Suckling and Hayden Crozier – those high half-backs who use the footy well.”
Daniel’s disposal efficiency and ability to drive the Bulldogs from defence into attack has been a regular feature in 2019.
“Over the past two years, Caleb has finished top-five in our best and fairest, highlighting his ability to perform consistently across matches and seasons,” GM of List & Recruiting Sam Power said.
“His ball use and decision-making from the back half provides plenty of impact, and he is having an outstanding season.
“Caleb is composed under pressure and a real competitor – traits which we value really highly.”
Daniel believes more consistency within games will help drive the Bulldogs to greater heights.
“We’ve been in a lot of games this year, and we’ve fallen away for a quarter and that’s cost us – or we’ve fallen away for half a quarter,” he said.
“It’s probably just playing those full four quarters for more games, and that comes with experience
“I can’t really put a pass mark on it (the season) – but we’re striving to play finals and we’re trying to win every game we can.”
