Back-to-back demolitions of the opponents in recent weeks is no reason for complacency says Williamstown Senior Coach Peter German ahead of his side’s Saturday night clash against the Casey Scorprions.

After accounting for a Coburg line-up laden with AFL-listed players by 100 points in round two and western rivals Werribee by 83 points last weekend, Williamstown have once again established themselves amongst the competition front runners in season 2013.

“The scoreboard is the end result of a lot of hard work but I have been really pleased with the way our players have started in the last couple of weeks,” German said.

“You only win like that because you have played strong, aggressive, hard football for four quarters.”

German’s men are well placed to end Casey’s undefeated streak in 2013, but the coach refuses to downplay their ability after a strong start to the season.

“Casey have started really well, they had a fantastic win last week against Essendon at Windy Hill, so they’ve got some really good young players and some of their AFL listed players… were very, very good,” he said.

“Out at Casey Fields - on their home deck - it is going to be a really tough game there is no doubt about it – we lost there last year by one point early in the season.

“We know what they are capable of and how they play the ground out there so we are looking forward to playing on a big ground.”

Placing a high premium on the Seagulls’ ability to defend the ground, German said Williamstown must be prepared to battle through the midfield to restrict Casey’s ball movement.

“The way they used the ball last week and [were] able to [move] it forward and kick 25 goals shows that our back six and mids are really going to have to work hard as well to defend,” he said.

“They’ve got some fire power so we’ve got to try to kick a side that has kicked 25 goals… that’s a big ask.

“It’s like anything, how we prepare and how we put our defensive structures into place is going to have a big impact.”
