The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation proudly hosted a vibrant celebration of Cultural Diversity Week 2024 at the Bowery Theatre and Errington Reserve. Following the State government’s theme, “Our Shared Stories - Celebrating Together,” the partnership between the Foundation, inTouch, The Youth Junction and Empowering Communities saw 200 community members come together for a festival of culture, dialogue, and recognition.
The day began at 10:00 am with an outdoor festival at Errington Reserve, featuring an array of performances, workshops, and sporting activities. Attendees experienced the joy of Bollywood dancing, the rhythmic beats of African drumming, and the grace of Vietnamese dancing, and were encouraged to participate in workshops teaching each of these.
The festival offered something for everyone, from hands-on workshops to delicious multicultural nibbles, showcasing the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our community.
At 12:30, the celebration transitioned into a sold-out Bowery Theatre for a keynote speech and apanel discussion that delved into the importance of multiculturalism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Maryum Chaudhry, Executive Manager for Sector & Community at InTouch, served as the master of ceremonies, guiding the discussions and ensuring a day of meaningful dialogue.
Ameet Bains, CEO of the Western Bulldogs welcomed the gathered crowds, drawing upon his own experience in growing as the son of Indian migrants to Australia, stressing the importance of multiculturalism to the Football Club.
The panel discussion featured a bevy of talent; Fred Alale AM, co-founder of the African Music and Culture Festival, Hamed Allahyari, founder of Salamatea café, Sama Morad, whom arrived in Australia from Syria in 2017 and is now studying desidn & business and Tarni Jarvis, Djab Wurrong artist and founder of Kurrong Kalat.
The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation also took the opportunity to announce the recipients of the WB Community Foundation Awards, recognizing inspirational advocates who have made significant contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the West.
Zac Petrevski was honoured with the Diversity Advocate of the West award for his dedication as a Physical Education teacher at the Western English Language School. Known affectionately as “Mr. Zac,” he has been instrumental in assisting newly arrived migrants and refugees find a way to connect with the wider community -by equipping them with s through sports, fostering their connection with the local community and promoting inclusivity.
Ihaab Ahmad, a year 10 student passionate about creating positive change within the Braybrook community, was honoured with the Young Diversity Advocate of the West in recognition for his leadership in youth issues, particularly youth crime. This caps off a stellar month for the Haileybury student, which also saw him win the Maribyrnong Civic Youth Leadership award.
The East African Women’s Foundation was celebrated for its impactful work with the East African community in Melbourne, helping to reduce poverty, improve health, and support women and families in establishing themselves in Australia.
