Star midfielder Adam Treloar has commended the team’s ability to maintain momentum in Sunday’s 48-point win over Gold Coast.
While he said the Bulldogs typically start strong, there is sometimes a tendency to relinquish that pressure which allows other teams to close the gap.
“I don't want to downplay it – that start was very pleasing, and we’re very, very happy that we were able to do it from the very start and then maintain that, but the thing is we've done that quite a bit over the last 12-24 months,” Treloar told SEN on Tuesday morning.
“We did it last week against Melbourne - we started the game really well.
“It’s just having those periods where there may be a lull in the game or we lose momentum. Whatever it may be, it's being able to stem those and then gain momentum back.
“Again it was pleasing on the weekend that Gold Coast came at us a little bit after half-time and then towards the end of the third quarter - the fact that we were able to wrestle the momentum back and build off the back of how we were playing and how we wanted to move the footy.
“That was probably the most pleasing thing for me - starting the game well and having that consistency throughout but also when we are challenged, being able to arrest the momentum back and then ultimately win the game.”
Treloar was also full of praise for first-year Bulldog Ryley Sanders, who he has become somewhat of a mentor to over the last few months.
“I work really closely with Sando - he's someone that as soon as he got to the club, I tried to help him, and continuously try to, just to put him on the right way and help fast-track his development,” Treloar said.
“From what we've seen, he's probably the most impressive (teenager) any of us have seen, and I've seen a lot of 18-year-olds come through my time. The way that he's so professional, diligent, driven, motivated and committed is just a breath of fresh air for all of us.
“I love running out with him. He’s going to be an absolute superstar - mark my words, Gerard. He's going to be an absolute star and I can't wait to see what he produces not only this year, but for the Western Bulldogs footy club for hopefully 10-15 years.
“It’s funny because as we got closer, he obviously opened up a little bit more. I think I used to be one of his wallpaper photos on his iPad a few years ago, so it's pretty cool.
“It’s pretty surreal for me too because I'm still a big kid at heart and I still have my challenges, but I love being able to mentor someone like Sando and help fast track his development, as I said.”
