Bulldogs young gun Cody Weightman says while he is a “small forward at heart”, he’s enjoyed the challenge of adding midfield minutes to his game.
Weightman spent part of last Saturday’s practice match against the Hawks playing as a midfielder, before returning to his customary role inside 50.
He said while it’s been refreshing to play a different role at times, deep down he wants to perfect the small forward game.
“I've obviously pretty much been just a small forward this far, but I think that always the plan - only recently we explored some midfield time and I actually really enjoyed that,” Weightman told SEN’s Sportsday as part of the Bulldogs Blitz on Tuesday.
“The last couple of games I’ve done a bit of (midfield) and it looks like a good way to potentially free me up in games and give different looks to opposition.
“Hopefully there's a bit of that going on in the near future, but definitely I’m still a small forward heart. I really like the challenge and the battle of it.
“It’s a really tough position to play obviously, and really rated high internally which I try to get a kick out of because it does make a big impact when played right.
“I'm doing everything I can to try and play it as well as I can. I think I'm getting there, but I'm still a long way to go for sure.”
Weightman also acknowledged the way the team rectified their goalkicking misfortunes in the practice match, which saw them accumulate 15.5 in the second half.
“I think we've been kicking quite well - the wind might not have helped (in Tasmania), but we’ve been pretty lucky to have a big indoor facility that we're kicking in at the moment.
“We did actually resurrect it though - we talked about it today. In the second half we actually kicked quite accurately.
“We're always focused on the negative in the first half, but yeah, we think we went right in the second half. Hopefully the Marvel effect will help us too.”
