Premiership Bulldog. Charles Sutton Medallist. Western Bulldogs vice-captain.
These are all interchangeable terms for star midfielder Tom Liberatore, who was today announced as skipper Marcus Bontempelli’s deputy for 2024.
Having been nine years since Liberatore’s last formal leadership title, he said it’s a responsibility he will not take lightly.
“It’s extremely humbling. I’m just very grateful to be recognised by my teammates – it’s something I’ll take responsibility for and just grab the opportunity with both hands,” Liberatore said.
“I want to try and set a really good example for my teammates, and just try and help us get better.”
The 31-year-old also hopes to be a shoulder to lean on for his teammates, and in particular his skipper.
“I just want to bring that consistency and reliability - maybe I can be more of that calmer shoulder for Marcus to lean on here and there,” Liberatore said.
“I also want to be someone who will be supportive, and also be a good listener to help the younger group as well.”
Liberatore joins Liam Jones and Ed Richards as new additions to the leadership group, while Aaron Naughton and Caleb Daniel have been elevated to deputy vice-captains.
Taylor Duryea also remains in the seven-man group from last year.
“It’s really exciting, especially to have Ed – he’s come on really well in the last sort of 12 months in the leadership space,” Liberatore said.
“He’s really vocal at training and has a great relationship with the younger boys as well.
“The impression Jonesy has made too has just been outstanding – to see him also in the group is really exciting.”
