As we step into the new year, I find it both humbling and thrilling to connect with you as we mark a significant milestone - the 10th anniversary of Sons of the West.
Who could have known that when we began this initiative to address men’s health in the inner west of Melbourne it would blossom into a vibrant community dedicated to fostering health, wellbeing, and mateship across western Victoria and beyond.
As we celebrate this decade of impact, let us also look forward to the opportunities and challenges that 2024 brings. While we will continue to consolidate and grow our existing work in the areas of health and wellbeing, youth leadership, cultural diversity, social inclusion and community advocacy, we have a number of key events and initiatives planned to further our mission and impact.
At the forefront of our calendar are two significant events in March. On March 4, 2024, we will observe International Women's Day, a time to honour the achievements and contributions of women in our community.
Following closely on March 20, we will celebrate Cultural Diversity Week, embracing and recognizing the rich tapestry of cultures that make the west so uniquely vibrant. These events are not just celebrations but a call to action to continue building a community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
2024 also marks the launch of our Foundation awards, the “Champions of the West”. This initiative is designed to recognise and honour individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to our community.
These champions embody the spirit and values that the Foundation stands for, and we look forward to celebrating their achievements with you.
This year, we will also complete the redevelopment of the Whitten Oval precinct, which will become the centrepiece of Melbourne’s west, a home for both a professional sporting club and a common place for the community featuring our dedicated community hub.
As a passionate sports fan, I love a win – and we’ve already had two. Our new partnership with RSL Victoria to bring Daughters of the West to Wodonga is a testament to the strength and appeal of our programs, and the early enthusiasm and uptake by local veterans has been heartening.
Meanwhile, Audrey, a participant of the Youth Leadership Project was named young citizen of the year by the Ararat Rural City, proving that making big impact in the community is possible for anyone.
As we move forward, let us carry the lessons learned and the friendships forged over the past decade into this new year and beyond. Your continued support, enthusiasm, and dedication make the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation so special.
Here's to another year of growth, impact, and community.
With heartfelt thanks and anticipation,
Go Dogs!
