WESTERN Bulldogs forward Daniel Giansiracusa says teammate Matthew Boyd should be considered as one of the league’s highest-rated midfielders after his 40-possession game against North Melbourne.

Boyd, who won the club’s best and fairest last year, broke his personal best disposal rate against the Roos after a 16-possession third quarter that helped turn the Dogs’ fortunes around.

Giansiracusa said the 27-year-old, who has averaged over 31 touches across his 16 games his year, had become an “A-grade” midfielder.

“He’s a fantastic leader and he always steps up to the mark when we need someone,” he said.

“He’s very consistent; him and Daniel Cross always put their heads over the footy but Boydy’s just fantastic.

“From where he’s come from on the rookie list, he’s definitely an A-grader. I’m glad he’s on our side.

“He probably doesn’t get the kudos of other midfielders but I rate him up there with some of the best going around.”

Giansiracusa rated the Dogs as poor in the first half against the Roos, despite eventually running out 71-point winners.

He said their lack of concentration was particularly disappointing after they put a focus on not suffering from an emotional letdown from last Sunday’s post-Jason Akermanis win over Fremantle.

“We talked about [a letdown]. Rocket talked about on Wednesday and we talked about it again today,” he said.

“As players, that should get in our head and be in the forefront of our minds.

“They say the game is played above the shoulders and for some reason, we were off a little bit.”

He said it took a “burst” from coach Rodney Eade at half time to help reset the players’ concentration.

“It was probably us leaders that weren’t showing the way,” he said. “I think we did in the second half but we shouldn’t need a rocket to get ourselves going.

“It also just shows how even the competition is. We were probably off by five per cent and they made us pay a few times.

“But we won by 71 points in the end so it’s a good win. We’ve just got to bank it and move on to Adelaide next week.”

Giansiracusa set a personal best of his own on Sunday with five goals, which he said was a good return in a year he so far rates as “up and down”.
