Footscray skipper Lachie Sullivan and senior-listed ruck Jordon Sweet have been named in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL Team of the Year, as announced at Monday’s league awards night.

It marked an extra special selection for Sullivan, who was also revealed as captain of the side.

Sullivan enjoyed a prolific 2023 campaign, averaging 31 touches, 5.9 tackles, 7.6 clearances and 4.4 inside 50s to be named a follower.

Sweet was arguably one of the competition’s leading rucks, averaging 43.2 hit-outs, 13.8 disposals, five clearances and 5.3 tackles to be selected as the starting ruck.

Werribee’s Michael Barlow was chosen as coach of the team.

Players must have played a minimum of 12 matches to be considered for selection in the Smithy's VFL Team of the Year.
