LAST TIME THEY MET
West Coast 9.6 (60) def. by Western Bulldogs 25.11 (161)
It was a historic win for the Bulldogs last season at Optus Stadium, recording both their greatest winning margin as well as their highest ever score against the Eagles. The Bulldogs generated 31 more inside 50s and won 28 more contested possessions in the 101-point triumph, while also equalling the all-time record with 16 individual goalkickers. Ruck Tim English was prolific with 25 touches, eight clearances, 21 hit outs and a goal, while Adam Treloar (35 disposals, nine marks, four clearances, one goal) was impactful. Aaron Naughton finished with four majors from 11 disposals, with unlikely goalkicker Alex Keath finding himself forward on two occasions to boot a career-high pair of majors.
TALKING POINTS
1. A chance to bounce back
After a narrow loss to the Hawks on Sunday, the Bulldogs will need to bounce back against the Eagles this weekend in order to keep their season alive.
As leader Taylor Duryea put it yesterday, destiny is still in the Dogs’ hands.
“We, as players, definitely believe in the system that puts us in games all the time. Except for maybe the first couple of rounds in the year, we feel like we could have won all of our games,” he said.
“From that point of view, I think as players knowing that we are in games and can push sides – we can take confidence from that.
“It’s just about executing that, which is the frustration I know for us and obviously for our fans as well.
“It is in our hands and we are a really tight-knit group.”
2. Bontempelli closing in on Club record
Marcus Bontempelli is closing in on the Club’s all-time tackling record, having laid 152 tackles from the season so far.
Fellow midfield bull Tom Liberatore holds the current record for most tackles in a season with 173, at an average of 7.86 which he achieved in 2014.
Bontempelli is currently travelling at an average of 7.24, and requires 21 more to catch Liberatore.
In the Dogs’ last home match against the Eagles, the skipper starred with the sealer to will his side over the line by seven points.
Let’s hope for another strong showing from the captain.
