Senior coach Luke Beveridge has lauded his side’s ability to weather the storm in Saturday afternoon’s win over Fremantle.
While only 10 or so points separated the two teams for majority of the day, it wasn’t until the Bulldogs found their groove late with a seven-goal burst to close out the game.
“We weathered a bit of a storm there in that third quarter. I thought the boys did well to focus and do that better,” Beveridge told media post-match.
“North Melbourne, in our previous game we played, got probably four goals from their forward 50 (stoppages), and two from ours, going the full length of the ground which is unusual. As a collective, we were really displeased with it. We worked on some stuff.
"I thought the boys just held their nerve. To be up, then provide a bit of momentum back the other way through some ball use and decisions in the 0-40 (zone), that was a bit of a concern.
"So, to keep our composure and come again - what the lads did in the last quarter was fantastic."
Beveridge also called out rising forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan’s impact, and the team’s improved set-shot conversion.
“It’s a healthy thing to be able to convert. Our set shots were where we’d like them to be, and our effectiveness on those turnovers and being able to create meaningful shots at goal was encouraging against a team like Fremantle who is a pretty good defensive outfit,” Beveridge said.
"Every week, Marra's getting harder and harder to play against. He's working extremely hard, and there's good variety in his game.
"His field kicking and decision aspect probably between arcs and going over the 50m line when he's outside there, he's continuing to focus on improvements there, because he's getting up the ground and he's getting back.
"But his highest point aerial game is on point. It's a difficult thing to contend with, but he's working hard early to give himself some space and look like he wants the ball. Over the last period of time, we've been able to get it to him. He had a really influential afternoon."
Ugle-Hagan finished with four goals from 15 disposals and nine marks, and said he was pleased with his output.
“Everyone just played their role and we ended up getting the W. Our forwards – we just worked well together and finished our set shots. That’s what made us get the win,” Ugle-Hagan said post-match.
“(Fremantle) put up a fair fight, but at the end of the day we ended up winning so it was good.”
The Bulldogs will next turn their attention to Collingwood this Friday night at Marvel Stadium.
