Three-time AFLW All Australian and triple Club Champion Ellie Blackburn will continue as captain of the Western Bulldogs in season seven.

It will be the fourth consecutive season Blackburn has served as solo skipper, initially appointed co-captain in 2019 after leading the team to its inaugural flag in 2018.

She was also named the AFLPA’s Best Captain in 2021.

Blackburn said it was an honour to be voted in once again by her peers.

“It’s a real privilege not only to continue as captain of this Club, but to be chosen by my teammates – I don’t take that for granted,” the 27-year-old said.

“I love being at the Dogs, and I love the group that we’ve got here. I’m really passionate about what we’re building and want to help drive future success.

“Last season taught me a lot – we dealt with a number of challenges both on and off the field, so to come out the other side of that and just miss out on finals was heart-breaking.

“We’re definitely hungry this season, and are ready to make our mark on the competition. I can’t wait to get stuck into the season proper.”

Blackburn will be supported by a three-player leadership group, with reliable defender Katie Lynch joining existing members Kirsty Lamb and Bailey Hunt.

“I personally can’t think of a better person to lead this team to where we want to go,” head coach Nathan Burke said.

“Ellie has all the qualities of a great leader and inspiring captain, which we’ve seen both on and off the field over the last four seasons. She drives our standards, leads by example and is willing to do anything for the team.

“Joined by Lamby, Bailey and Lynchy, I have no doubts this leadership group will flourish and lift our entire playing group to another level this season.”
