The Footscray Bulldogs battled valiantly but couldn’t overcome the GWS Giants in a competitive encounter at Blacktown ISP.

Despite a strong start and moments of brilliance, the Dogs fell behind early and trailed for much of the game, with the final score a 6.11 (47) to 17.18 (120) loss.

The match began with promise for Footscray, as Lachlan Smith opened the scoring account with an early goal in the first quarter, igniting the Dogs’ spirits.

However, the Giants responded swiftly with two of their own, before Jordan Croft pulled one back for the Bulldogs, narrowing the gap to just two points.

The Giants regained control again, leaving Footscray 12 points down at the first break.

The second quarter saw the Giants strike first, extending their lead. Caleb Poulter answered for the Dogs, slotting a goal to reduce the margin to 12 points, but the quarter proved challenging.

David Cuningham marked his first goal in Bulldogs’ colours, providing a highlight, yet a dominant term from the hosts saw Footscray trail by 42 points at half time.

Will Lewis delivered a long-range goal from the boundary halfway through the third quarter, sparking hopes of a comeback as the Dogs continued to chase. Despite their efforts, the Giants maintained their edge, keeping Footscray at bay.

Strong performances from Taylor Duryea (30 disposals, eight marks) and Oskar Baker (27 disposals, six marks) stood out, while Daniel Orgill impressed with his physicality, recording nine tackles and nine marks.

The red, white and blue will look to regain momentum when they face Collingwood at Victoria Park on Saturday 3 May.
