LAST MEETING
Western Bulldogs 9.17 (71) defeated Sydney 9.6 (60)

An inaccurate Bulldogs outfit broke through for their first win of the 2022 season with an 11-point triumph over the Swans in round three. Leading from start to finish, the Bulldogs survived a late Sydney surge to hold on at Marvel Stadium, enjoying a much-needed win to kickstart their campaign. Star midfielder Josh Dunkley was prolific with 30 disposals, 11 tackles and six clearances, alongside Lachie Hunter (28 touches, seven marks) and returning Bailey Smith (31 touches, five marks, 731m gained). Cody Weightman finished with three goals in an impactful performance up forward, while ruck Tim English contributed with 24 disposals, eight marks, eight clearances and 28 hit-outs.

THE TALKING POINTS

Duo set to return
The Bulldogs look set to welcome back Tim English and Ed Richards for the round 17 Friday night clash. English has missed the last two games through delay concussion symptoms, while Richards sat last week’s match out with a concussion of his own. They will be welcomed additions to the line-up if so – and play important roles as the Dogs look to make a play for the top eight.

Travel bug
A win tomorrow night would not only help the Bulldogs move closer to a top eight spot, but will also help improve their interstate win-loss record. From their four games outside of Victoria this season, they’ve notched up two wins (West Coast at Optus Stadium and GWS at Giants Stadium) and will be keen to add their third win to the table.

Battle of the small forwards
Cody Weightman. Tom Papley. The two small forwards are some of the competition’s best at the moment, and with wet conditions expected will be sure to put on a show come Friday night. From his 13 games this season, Weightman has contributed 22 goals at an average of 1.7 - slotting a bag of five twice. Papley isn’t far behind though - adding 12 goals from his nine matches to average 1.3 a game.
