WESTERN Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade has joined Geelong's Mark Thompson in questioning the hardness of the Brisbane Lions' home ground and said his players were sore after their round-four excursion north.

Thompson last week claimed the ground had caused his players unreasonable soreness after their round-15 clash with the Lions last year and on Tuesday said players shouldn’t be expected to play on hard cricket pitches.

"I'd hate to be Brisbane playing at the Gabba all the time. We played up there and we were all pretty sore from it," Eade said.

He also said the club's conditioning staff would monitor their players over the next month given the side's heavy schedule at Etihad Stadium, which is renowned for its firmness.

"We've got four weeks in a row now at Etihad and put it this way, we've spoken about it internally and how we need to manage the players," he said.

"Growing [Etihad's surface] on a car park is obviously difficult. I saw the Sunday game and the ground looked okay, but whether it's still hard now I'm not sure.

"Certainly earlier in the year it was patchy and it was difficult for players. Hopefully it's okay for the next few weeks."
