Christmas came early yesterday for around 6000 special children at the 2007 Variety Christmas Party at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.
For three hours, disabled and disadvantaged children and 3000 carers/parents enjoyed activities including carnival rides, a disco, face painting and the Variety Liberty Swing. A miniature helicopter and police vehicle from Victoria Police also kept children entertained at the fun event.
As a community partner of Variety, The Children’s Charity, the LeasePlan Western Bulldogs were more than willing to get involved in what has become one of the biggest Christmas parties for special children around the world.
Players Shaun Higgins and Lindsay Gilbee were on hand to pose for photos and sign autographs for children like Michael Rocco (pictured) from Narre Warren, helping to put a smile on the faces of the thousands of children in attendance.
Santa also made a special appearance on stage, making a grand arrival on the back of a fire engine with Melbourne Lord Mayor John So. Children then joined Santa in a sing-a-long to everyone’s favourite Christmas song - Santa Clause is coming to town.
At the conclusion of the Christmas party, every child received an early Christmas present to take home and enjoy over the festive season. The presents were bought by Variety through the countless donations made by the public throughout the year.
The party has become a Christmas tradition in Melbourne since the first event was held in 1995.
Event organizers, entertainers and 2000 volunteers donated their time to help put a smile on the faces of the many disabled and disadvantaged children.
